near-field communication (NFC)

We’re on the cusp of seamless interactivity between our phones and static devices. And while NFC may fundamentally differ from RFID and Bluetooth in terms of how it works, the outcomes are more or less the same: chip-to-chip communications via wireless frequency connections let gadgets talk to each other without the internet. So what’s the big deal? It basically means that mass markets could suddenly get even more massive in ways that, at the moment, are too complex, exciting and eerie to predict.
