open-source

In the past, innovation came from a single point. But now working in complete isolation feels unthinkable. Peer production and public modification lets technology grow organically, for the collective benefit of end users. Open-source tech has provided the way forward, a systematic shell for developers to fill, which encourages a higher degree of choice and operates outside the mechanics of fees and royalties. This turn towards free access and distribution may turn off larger companies, but collaboration and co-creation are how makers make and doers do.
